Mr. Elvis

Elvis the cat is completely blind and perhaps completely deaf. He gets along fine though and is a good groomer. My wife is away and I needed to clean his room today. As a result of his car accidents, his nasal passages and sinus’s are not quite right. To put it frankly, he snots a lot. The floor in his room was just a mess with boogs. I used a table knife and hot water with detergent to get them cleaned up.

But first I had to get him out of the room as I needed to vacuum also. I set him up in the master bathroom with a box, a bunk, food, and water. Then went to work. Vacuumed up all of the food crumbs and then washed the floor. Once it was all cleaned up, I put him back and he seemed to be happy again.

Elvis meows or howls at the top of his lungs 1. When he is hungry, 2. When he uses his box, 3. When he has found his bed and is ready to lay down. He seems to sense also when you walk through the room to check on him. Sometimes that will set him off as well. He wakes up hungry between 4:30AM and 5:30AM. So even though I am on vacation, I have been getting up each day. At the same time, I put out new feed for the other cats, change the boxes, and feed the birds. Then I can go back to bed until 7:00 or so.

Each evening, Elvis gets a walk outside and then walks around the kitchen while the other cats are fed. Here is a picture of Elvis on his walk singing his little song.

Calm voice of reason

With all of the noise and furor associated with the current financial distress, it is a relief to read someone who comments with wisdom and sanity. Check out Irving Wladawsky-Berger. Dr. Wladawsky-Berger was with IBM for 37 years and currently advises Citigroup and is a visiting professor at MIT.

Busy Weekend

BOTH of my children were home this weekend. And my wife is a away taking care of aging parents and belongings (mostly my daughters) left in the midwest. She will be returning on the Thanksgiving day so we will postpone our festival meal until the weekend. The kids and I had fun talking, listening to music, cooking (not me) and generally hanging out. I am on vacation to take care of the kitties. All 7 kitties are doing fine. On Sunday, we went to Climbin’ High. The kids climbed, I took pics.

Flight Simulator Excitement

As I was goofing off today on vacation, I twittered that I was going flying on flight simulator. I later got an email that someone was following me. I checked and he was a flight sim enthusiast and he had links to 10 scariest airports. I took some notes and tried the first one on the list. Paro Bhutan runway 33. Here are some thoughts on the numerous attempts (more than a cat has lives).

There must be some way out of here. Said the Joker to the Thief…

The Paro airport in Bhutan is in a bowl in the mountains. The surface is over 7000 feet. How do you fly out of here in a Cessna 172 (or anything else for that matter).

I put the Paro airport in and took the defaults. Runway 33 faces a cliff way too high to get over. Forget treetops, this is solid rock. Let’s get real. You would not be headed in this direction without serious headwind. Adjust weather. Crank in an appropriate headwind. What would make you choose 33 vs 15. Do you need all that fuel? Lighten up. Leave those souvenirs behind and also that passenger. Know the Pilot’s Manual. Best angle of climb is key here. Review the route. The best mountain route is not always shortest.

Hints: The route to the north is a dead end. But you will always feel like you can make it. Wrong!
A well executed tight 180 to the left might work. Give it a try.
This will take you out to the SE which is probably the way you came in.

There’s too much confusion, I can’t get no relief.
Gotta beware gotta beware…

Icemaker III

Icemaker quit. Icemaker broken. Icemaker does not work again. Icemaker motor stalls. This time the fix is simple. Warm up the ice until it dumps one more time. Back off the cube size (on my icemaker, 1/4 turn CCW). Test.

Perhaps more involved for this fix as the freezer was full. I have sometimes been able to get the ice to come out by pouring hot water to melt the previous cycle or using a hair-dryer to warm it up enough that it comes out. This time I removed the bottom screw that attaches the unit to the freezer wall and loosened the two top hanger screws. Unplugged the connector (squeeze the tabs and work loose), removed the icemaker unit until is was thawed. Made the adjustment (1/4 turn CCW) and replaced. Works good.

Leaves

I got up early this morning so that I could take pictures in Fountain Inn of the Fall weather. I have posted a few of them at the Weather Underground picture site. I will select a few more perhaps and put them up to Flickr. When I got back Elvis was sleeping.

I started raking after the pictures were up, took a break for lunch. After lunch, I brought Elvis outside to help me. He wandered about while I raked. If he got too far I would bring him back, hold him a bit, give him some pats, set him down, rake some more, repeat for about an hour.

I still have the back yard to do. I had better get back to it to finish before dark.

Cold Front

View through the Window Outside TodayWhen I went out to get the paper this morning, it was 63F (17C). It felt noticeably warm even with the gusty breeze. But a few minutes ago when I was out washing the cat boxes, it felt as though a chill had set on. The wind that brought the clearing weather also brought the cold. The sky is now scattered cumulus clouds. The bright blue is lovely against the yellow leaves that remain.

November Weather

Yesterday was November weather. It was overcast, cool-to-cold, drizzle or fog, gray, dark. These are necessary and sufficient for November. Today, much needed rain, maybe as much as 1/2 inch. Necessary but probably not sufficient. It was enough to bring a bunch more of the leaves down. If it is dry this week, I will be able to rake as I am on vacation taking care of the cats while my wife is away.

Owl

It is the season when the leave change colors and fall. The acorns are so thick under the trees as work that they create a hazard in the parking lot. It is like trying to walk on ball-bearings.

I heard the owl sing its mournful song as I went out in the dark. The cold has made the stars stand out against the blackness of the sky. It seems that I only hear owl’s song in Fall and Winter. It could be owl sing just before dawn and I do not get out that early when the days are longer.

I had seen a large hawk perched in a tree beside the enclosed bridge that goes to the next building. This week he seems to have moved on.

A Spell for Halloween

For Halloween I thought that I would re-publish this:
